Little giraffe in hiking gear

This giraffe is made using the same basic body shape as my other little animals, meaning that it will for into the clothes made for any of those patterns.

Difficulty:

Easy


You will need:
  • Brown and yellow dk yarn
  • a scrap of black dk yarn
  • 4ply yarn in white, blue, black and whatever colours you want the shoes, rucksack and shirt to be
  • a scrap of golden embroidery thread
  • a darning needle
  • 2 small green buttons (about 5mm)
  • green sewing thread and needle
  • toy stuffing
  • a 2mm and 2.5mm crochet hook


For the giraffe:
Use yellow dk yarn and a 2.5mm crochet hook

For the head and body (starting from the base):
Make a magic loop with 6sc
Round 1: 2sc in each st (12sc)
Round 2: sc in the first st, 2sc in the next st, rep  to end (18sc)
Round 3: sc in the first 2 sts, 2sc in the next st, rep to end. ch1, turn (24sc)
Rounds 4 - 8: (5 rounds) sc in each st (24sc)
Round 9: sc in the first 2 sts, sc2tog, rep to end (18sc)
Round 10: sc in the first st, sc2tog, rep to end (12sc)
Round 11: sc in the first st, sc2tog, rep to end (8sc)
Rounds 12 - 15: (4 rounds) sc in each st (8sc)
Round 16: 2sc in each st (16sc)
Round 17: sc in each st
Round 18: sc in the first 3 sts, 2sc in the next st, rep to end (20sc)
Round 19: sc in each st
Round 20: sc in the first 4 sts, 2sc in the next st, rep to end (24sc)
Rounds 21 - 22: (2 rounds) sc in each st
Round 23: sc in the first 2 sts, sc2tog, rep to end (18sc)
Round 24: sc in the first st, sc2tog, rep to end (12sc)
Round 25: sc2tog to end (6sc)
Fasten off


For the arms (make 2):
Make a magic loop with 6sc
Round 1: sc in the first st, 2sc in the next st, rep to end (9sc)
Rounds 2 - 3: (2 rounds) sc in each st (9sc)
Round 4: sc in the first st, sc2tog, rep to end (6sc)
Rounds 5 - 9: (5 rounds) sc in each st (6sc)
Fasten off

For the legs (make 2):

Make a magic loop with 6sc
Round 1: 2sc in each st (12sc)
Round 2: sc in the first 3 sts, 2cs in the next st, rep to end (15sc)
Rounds 3 - 4: (2 rounds) sc in each st (15sc)
Round 5: sc2tog 3 times, sc in the last 9 sts (12sc)
Round 6: sc in the first 2 sts, sc2tog, rep to end (9sc)
Rounds 7 - 10: (4 rounds) sc in each st (9sc)
Fasten off

For the horns:
Make a magic loop with 6sc
Round 1: sc in the first 2 sts, 2sc in the next st, rep to end (8sc)
Round 2: sc in each st
Round 3: sc2tog in each st (4sc)
Rounds 4 - 5: (2 rounds) sc in each st (4sc)
Fasten off

For the ears (make 2):
Make a magic loop with 3sc ch1, turn
Rows 1 - 2: (2 rows) sc in each st. ch1, turn
Row 3: sc2tog, sc in the last st

Fasten off

For the tail:
With yellow ch5
Fasten off

With brown make a magic loop with 4sc
Round 1: sc in each st
FAsten off
Sew this brown section to the end of the yellow section.

Sew the giraffe together and then use the brown dk yarn to embroider spots on.
Embroider the nose and eyes using black yarn.

For the top:
With green 4ply yarn and a 2mm crochet hook fsc39
Round 1: sc in the first st of the row, sc to end
Rounds 2 - 7: (6 rounds) sc in each st
Row 8: sc in the first 11 sts, sc2tog, rep to end. ch1, turn (36sc)
Row 9: sc in each st. ch1, turn (36sc)
Row 10: sc in the first 5 sts, ch8, skip 8 sts from base of chain, sc in the next 4 sts, slip the next 2 sts, sc in the next 4 sts, ch8, skip 8 sts from base of chain, sc in the last 5 sts. turn
Row 11: slip the first 13sts, hdc in the next 4 sts, slip the next 2 sts, hdc in the next 4 sts, slip the last 13sts to end.
Fasten off

For the sleeves (make 2):
ch16
Round 1: sc in the first st, sc to end
Round 2: sc in each st
Row 3: sc in the first 6 sts, sc2tog, rep to end. ch1, turn (14sc)
Row 4: sc in the first 7 sts. ch1, turn (7sc)
Row 5: sc in the first 7 sts
Round 6: slip 16sts around the edge of the sleeve (one in each st and 1 in between the rows each time the stitching jumps up 2 rows because of where you did the sc7)
Fasten off

Sew the sleeves onto the top and make a buttonhole with the yarn at the back. Sew a button on opposite.


For the rucksack:
With green 4ply yarn and a 2mm hook fsc8. ch1, turn
Rows 1 - 2: (2 rows) sc in each st. ch1, turn (8sc)
Round 3: sc22 around the edge of the piece
Rounds 4 - 8: (5 rounds) sc in each st
Round 9: sc2tog, sc in the next 10 sts, sc2tog, sc in the last 8 sts (20sc)
Rounds 10 - 11: (2 rounds) sc in each st
Row 12: sc2tog, sc in the next 8 sts, sc2tog, sc in the last 8 sts. ch1, turn (18sc)
Rows 13 - 17: (5 rows) sc in the first 8 sts. ch1, turn (8sc)
Fasten off

For the straps (make 2):

Sew the straps onto the rucksack and make a little loop to make a buttonhole. Then sew a button on.

For the Jeans:
Using a 2mm crochet hook and dark blue 4ply yarn fsc 28
Round 1: sc in the first st of the of the row,  sc in each st to end. ch1, turn (28sc)
Rows 2 - 8: (7 rounds) sc in each st. ch1, turn
Row 9: sc in each st
Round 10: join to the other side, sc in each st around
Round 11: sc in the first 2 sts, ch 7, skip 13 sts from base of chain, sc in the last 12 sts
Rounds 12 - 23(12 rounds) sc in each st (21sc)
Fasten off
This makes the first leg of the jeans 
Rejoin yarn to the stitches left at the base of the leg you've just made.
Round 11: sc in each st, ch7, join with a slip st to the start of the round
Rounds 12-23:(12 rounds) sc in each st
Fasten off

For the belt loops (make 5):
ch7

sew the loops evenly around the top of the jeans

For the belt:
Use a 2mm crochet hook and black 4ply yarn

For the buckle:
use a 2mm hook and golden embroidery thread
ch8
sew both ends together. Sew one end of the belt onto the loop, then loop the belt through the belt loops and around the buckle, before tucking them into one of the belt loops


For the sunglasses:
For the lenses (make 2):
With black 4ply yarn and a 2mm crochet hook make a magic loop with 3 sc but do not join. ch1, turn
sc in each st
Fasten off

Thread a length of wire through the top edge of the lenses, then trim it and fold the ends over slightly so that they are the right size to fit your giraffe. Wind a length of 4ply black yarn around the wire, making sure to cover it as well as you can. Use a darning needle to secure it at each end, winding it around the little loop you made by folding the wire over

For the scarf:
With green 4ply yarn and a 2mm crochet hook fsc 2. ch1 turn
Rows 1 - 32: (32 rows) sc in each st. ch1, turn
Fasten off


For the converse (make 2):
Make a magic loop with 6sc
Round 1: 2sc in each st (12sc)
Round 2: sc in the first st, 2sc in the next st, rep  to end (18sc)
Round 3: sc in the first 2 sts, 2sc in the next st, rep to end. ch1, turn (24sc)
Round 4: sc in the back loops of each st
Round 5: sc in each st
Fasten off

Row 6: With green rejoin the yarn to the white section and sc in the back loops of 6 sts. ch1, turn (6sc)
Rows 7 - 9: (3 rows) sc in each st. ch1, turn (6sc)
Fasten off

Row 6: sc into the last st that you sc into in the first row of the last section, sc into each st around, including the first st that you crocheted into in the last section. ch1, turn (20sc)
Row 7: sc in each st. ch1, turn (20sc)
Row 8: sc2tog, sc to the last 2 sts, sc2tog. ch1, turn (18sc)
Row 9: sc2tog, sc to the last 2 sts, sc2tog. ch1, turn (16sc)
Fasten off

For the star (make 2):
Make a magic loop with 6 sc. Join.
Fasten off

sew the star on and use white 4ply yarn to lace up the converse.
