Thomas the tank engine James hat

Difficulty:

Easy - Medium

You will need:
  • dk yarn in black, white and grey
  • aran/ worsted weight yarn in red
  • a 5mm crochet hook
  • a 3mm crochet hook
  • A darning needle for sewing up
  • 25cm of red fleece (optional)

For the hat:
Using the pattern from the giraffe hat by Repeat Crafter Me make the hat in red.

For the face:
With grey make a magic loop with 6sc
Round 1: 2sc in each st (12sc)
Round 2: sc in the first st, 2sc in the next st, rep to end (18sc)
Round 3: sc in the first 2 sts, 2sc in the next st, rep to end (24sc)
Round 4: sc in the first 3 sts, 2sc in the next st, rep to end (30sc)
Round 5: sc in the first 4 sts, 2sc in the next st, rep to end (36sc)
Round 6: sc in the first 5 sts, 2sc in the next st, rep to end (42sc)
Round 7: sc in the first 6 sts, 2sc in the next st, rep to end (48sc)
Round 8: sc in the first 7 sts, 2sc in the next st, rep to end (54sc)
Join with a ss and fasten off

Join black dk yarn and sc in each st, then make slip stitches into the holes you just crocheted into. Fasten off

For the nose:
With grey dk yarn make a magic loop with 6sc
sc in each st
Join with a ss and fasten off

Sew the nose into the centre of the face

For the eyes (Make 2):
With white dk yarn and a 3mm hook make a magic loop with 6sc
Round 1: 2sc in each st (12sc)
join with a ss and fasten off

With black dk yarn make a magic loop with 6sc
Join with a ss and fasten off

Sew the black section onto the white section, then use white thread to sew a few stitches onto the black section, as shown below.

Then sew the eyes onto the face above and either side of the nose.

Eyebrows (make 2):
ch6
sc in 2nd st from hook
sc in the next st, then slip the next st
Fasten off

Sew the eyebrows on above the eyes with the larger section in the middle.

For the mouth:
ch6
Fasten off

Sew the mouth onto the face below the nose, curving it upwards slightly at the edges.

For the buffers:
Make a magic loop with 6sc
2sc in each st
Mak a ss and fasten off

Sew these onto the hat near to the bottom, as shown below.

For the black rectangular bit:
fsc16
(11 rows) ch1, turn, sc in each st
Fasten off

Sew this onto the hat just above the buffers (with the cast on edge on the bottom)

After you've seen this on sew the face on above it, so that the lowest 1/3 of the face is overlapping the black section.

For the funnel:
fsc8
ch1, turn. sc2tog, sc in the next 4 sts, sc2tog (6sc)
(3 rows) ch1, turn. sc in each st
ch1, turn. sc in each st then fsc 6 and make a slip stitch into the first stitch of this row (12sts)
(7 rounds) ch1, turn, sc into each st, make a slip stitch into the first stitch of the round (12sts)
Fasten off

For the top of the funnel:
With black make a magic loop with 6sc
2sc in each st
make a ss and fasten off

Sew this section onto the top of the funnel so that you are left with a sort of tube with the top covered over.
Stuff the upper section of the funnel

For the lip of the funnel:
fsc 16

Sew this onto the funnel about 1/5 of the way down. Sew it on sideways so that it is quite thin but sticks out a lot (as shown below)

Next see the whole funnel into the hat above the face, so that the bottom of the funnel touches the top of the face and the 3D section sticks out of the top of the hat.

For the number 5 (make 2):
ch24
sc in the 2nd ch from the hook, sc in the next 3 chain sts, 3sc in the next chain st, sc in the next 3 ch sts, 3sc in the next ch st, sc in the next 2 ch sts, (sc2tog, sc in the next ch st) 3 times, sc in the last 3 sts.
Fasten off

Sew these on either side of the hat

For the fleece lining (optional):
lay out the hat onto a folded piece of fleece and cut roughly around it.

You will end up with two roughly semi-circular pieces of fleece
Pin the fleece inside the hat with the side you want to be on the inside on the outside. Start pinning from the edge of the hat and continue up inside the hat.
After you've done this, pin together the excess fleece fabric as close to crocheted hat as possible, so that they are in the position that you want stitching to be when you sew it.
pin the edges of the fleece together inside the hat

Remove all of the pins except the ones you used to pin the excess fleece together, then use a sewing machine to sew over the place where the pins are, so that you have a singular hat-shaped fleece piece

Places this fleece lining inside the hat so that the seam is on the inside ( and so is hidden from view)and pin around the bottom of the hat, pinning the fleece to the crocheted section. You may want to try the hat on someone to pin it.
Next sew around where you've just pinned (you may want to tack it first if you're worried that it might slip.)

After you've done this cut the excess felt off neatly.
sew around the  crocheted edge then cut the excess felt off

Finally neaten the ends to the flaps by adding the toggles to it

Stegosaurus hat

The idea for this design was born when I tried to make a dragon hat. After finishing it I realised that not only was I not allowed to sell it at the craft fair I'm doing soon due to copyright, it also it bore an extreme likeness to a chicken. I then decided to take all of the copyrighted bits off the hat and change it into my own design.

(again, sorry about the terrible picture quality - I promise it does look slightly less brown in real life)

Difficulty:

Medium

You will need:
  • 5mm (H) crochet hook
  • Red and orange aran/ worsted weight yarn
  • A darning needle for sewing
  • Black yarn for the eyes

Make hat in orange with 19 sts in between the back of the two ear flaps. The pattern for the hat, which is available in sizes ranging from newborn to adult, can be found by following the link below. As I've only made this hat to fit a toddler/ pre-schooler,, I'm not sure that this size gap will work on all of the hats. If it doesn't you can alter the size of the gap and decrease in the same way as I have written below, decreasing a stitch at each end of every alternate row until you have 2 or 3 sts left, then sc2tog or sc3tog.

When making ear flaps instead of sc2tog when you reach 2 sts, sc in these two sts and then sc2tog. This makes it pointier.

To make tail:
Hold hat upside down and with the back side (the side with 19 sts in between the earflaps) facing you and ss into the st on the right.
Row 1: Ch1 so that there are two chains in total and dc into the same st
Row 2: Dc into the next 18 sts, ch2 turn (19 dc)
Dc2tog between the same st and the next st, dc 15, dc2tog, ch2, turn (17 dc)
Row 3: Dc in each st
Row 4: Dc2tog between the same st and the next st, dc 13, dc2tog, ch2, turn (15 dc)
Row 5: Dc in each st
Row 6: Dc2tog between the same st and the next st, dc 11, dc2tog, ch2, turn (13 dc)
Row 7: Dc in each st
Row 8: Dc2tog between the same st and the next st, dc 9, dc2tog, ch2, turn (11 dc)
Row 9: Dc in each st
Row 10: Dc2tog between the same st and the next st, dc 7, dc2tog, ch2, turn (9 dc)
Row 11:Dc in each st
Row 12: Dc2tog between the same st and the next st, dc 5, dc2tog, ch2, turn (7 dc)
Row 13: Dc in each st
Row 14: Dc2tog between the same st and the next st, dc 3, dc2tog, ch2, turn (5 dc)
Row 16: Dc in each st
Row 17: Dc2tog between the same st and the next st, dc 1, dc2tog, ch2, turn (3 dc)
Row 18: Dc in each st
Row 19: Dc3tog
Fasten off and weave in yarn tails.

For the head:
Magic ring ch2, 7dc in ring, ss into 1st dc
Ch2, 2dc in same sts, 2dc in each st, ss int 1st dc
Ch2, dc into same st, dc into each st, ss into 1st dc
Ch2, (dc into same st, 2dc into next st) rep to end, ss into 1st dc
Ch2, dc into same st, dc into each st, ss into 1st dc
Ch2, (dc into next 2 sts, 2dc into next st) rep to end, ss into 1st dc
Ch2, dc into same st, dc into each st, ss into 1st dc
Repeat last row

For the spikes:
There are six different sized spikes, listed in order of size, plus the tail spike.

Spike 1(make 2):
Ch5
Row 1: Sc in 2nd st from hook, sc to end, ch1, turn
Row 2: 2sc in 1st st, sc to last st, 2sc, ch1, turn (6sc)
Row 3: Sc in each st, ch1, turn
Row 4: 2sc in 1st st, sc to last st, 2sc, ch1, turn (8sc)
Row 5: Sc2tog, sc to last 2 sts, sc2tog (6sc)
Row 6: Sc2tog, sc to last 2 sts, sc2tog (4sc)
Row 7: Sc2tog twice (2sc)
Fow 8: Sc2tog (1sc)
Fasten off

Spike 2 (make 4):
Using red Ch 4
Row 1: Sc in 2nd st from hook, sc to end, ch1, turn (3sc)
Row 2: 2sc in 1st st, sc to last st, 2sc, ch1, turn (5sc)
Row 3: Sc in each, ch1, turn (5sc)
Row 4: 2sc in 1st st, sc to last st, 2sc, ch1, turn (7sc)
Row 5: Sc2tog, sc to last 2 sts, sc2tog (5sc)
Row 6: Sc2tog, sc, sc2tog (3sc)
Row 7: Sc3tog (1sc)
Fasten off

Spike 3 (make 6):
Using red, Ch3
Row 1: Sc in 2nd st from hook, sc to end, ch1, turn (2sc)
Row 2: 2sc in 1st st, sc to last st, 2sc, ch1, turn (4sc)
Row 3: 2sc in 1st st, sc to last st, 2sc, ch1, turn (6sc)
Row 4: Sc2tog, sc to last 2 sts, sc2tog (4sc)
Row 5: Sc2tog, sc, sc2tog (2sc)
Row 6: Sc2tog (1sc)
Fasten off

Spike 4 (make 6):
Make a magic loop/ adjustable ring then (dc, hdc) 5 times into the ring
Ss into the 1st dc
Fasten off

Spike 5 (make 4):
Make a magic loop/ adjustable ring then (hdc, sc) 5 times into the ring
Ss into the 1st hdc
Fasten off

Spike 6(make 8):
Make a magic loop/ adjustable ring then (sc, ss) 5 times into the ring
Ss into the 1st sc
Fasten off

Tail spike (make 4):
Using red Ch6, ss into 1st ch
Rounds 1-3: (4 rounds) Sc in each st (6sc)
Round 4: Sc2tog, sc in next 4 sts (5sc)
Round 5: Sc in each st (5sc)
Round 6: Sc2tog, sc in next 3 sts (4sc)
Round 7: Sc in each st (4sc)
Round 8: Sc2tog (3sc)
Fasten off and thread the yarn back through the remaining sts, pull tight and seccure.

For the legs:
Using orange yarn ch7
Row 1: dc in 2nd st from hook, dc in the next 5 sts, ch1, turn (6dc)
Rows 2-7: (6 rows) dc in each st, ch1, turn for 7 rows.
You can make the legs longer or shorter if you want by changing how many rows you add in between rows 2 and 7.

For the feet:
With red yarn make a magic ring with 6sc
Round 1: 2sc in each
Round 2: sc in 1st st, 2sc in next st
Round 3: sc in each st
Round 4: (sc2tog, sc) twice, sc in the next 10 sts
Round 5: sc2tog 3 times, sc in the next 10 sts
Round 6: sc3tog, sc in the next 10 sts
Round 7: (sc, sc2tog) to end
Fasten off

To make up:
sew the long sides of all of the leg pieces together and then stuff and sew the feet on underneath. Sew the head to the hat on the opposite side to the tail. Line up the spikes on top of the hat in pairs, with the largest two in the centre, where you made the magic loop on the hat, and then gradually getting smaller as they get further away from the centre. The order of the spikes in their pairs from the end of the tail to the tip of the head should be spike number:

6,6,6,5,5,4,4,3,3,2,1,2,3,4,6

(I hope that makes sense if not comment below and I'll post a diagram to show)

When sewing them on thread the yarn tail of the first three sized spikes through the fabric to the cast on edge and try to pull it so that it shapes the spike slightly. With the smaller spikes you don't need to do this as the tail will already be at the base but you should turn the spike so that the right side is on the inside of the hat. This will cause it to curve inwards slightly.

Sheep hat

This hat is slightly more complicated than the bear one, mainly because it uses a fluffy yarn that means that it's very difficult to see the stitches. I sort of just guessed where they were so the hat ended up a bit small but I don't think it really mattered too much.

Difficulty:

Medium

Materials:

  • 5mm (H) crochet hook
  • fluffy white chunky/ aran/ worsted weight yarn (I used chunky which worked fine but ideally aran or worsted weight would be better)
  • cream/ grey aran (or whatever colour you want to use for the head and legs of the sheep)
  • darning needle to sew up
  • black and white yarn (I used a chunky black and the white was dk but this was just what I had to hand so I think aran or worsted weight yarn would be better.)+

Make the hat using the fluffy white yarn - the pattern can be found here:
http://www.repeatcrafterme.com/2013/10/crochet-giraffe-hat-pattern.html

For the head:
With cream yarn make a magic loop with 6 sc
Round 1: 2sc in each st (12sc)
Round 2: sc in 1st st, 2sc in next st, rep to end (18sc)
Round 3: sc in first 2 sts, 2sc in next st, rep to end (24sc)
Round 4: sc in first 3 sts, 2sc in next st, rep to end (30sc)
Round 5: sc in first 4 sts, 2sc in next st, rep to end (36sc)
Rounds 6-10: (5 rounds) sc in each st (36sc)
Round 11: sc in first 4 sts, sc2tog, rep to end (30sc)
Round 12: sc in first 3 sts, sc2tog, rep to end (24sc)
Ss and fasten off, leaving a long tail to sew onto front of hat.

For the legs (make 4):
With cream yarn make a magic loop with 8 sc
Round 1: 2sc in each st (16sc)
Rounds 2-11: (10 rounds) sc in each st (16sc)
Ss and fasten off, leaving a long tail to sew onto the hat.

Stuff the legs and head and sew them on, referring to the picture if necessary.
If you want the head to be straight you might want to pin it on first to avoid it slipping around.

For the top of the head:
With fluffy white yarn make a magic loop with 6sc
Round 1: 2sc in each st (12sc)
Round 2: sc in 1st st, 2sc in next st, rep to end (18sc)
Round 3: sc in first 2 sts, 2sc in next st, rep to end (24sc)
Round 4: sc in first 3 sts, 2sc in next st, rep to end (30sc)
Ss and fasten off, use the yarn tail to sew it onto the top of the head

For the ears (make 2):
Using cream yarn ch 5
Row 1: Sc in the 2nd st from the hook, sc to end, ch1, turn (4sc)
Rows 2-3: (2 rows) Sc in each st, ch1, turn (4sc)
Row 4: sc2tog twice (2sc)
Row 5: sc in each st (2sc)
Row 6: sc2tog (1sc)
Fasten off, leaving a loose end. Weave in the short yarn tail at the base of the ear.  Thread the other length of yarn onto a needle and weave it back trough the fabric to the bottom and use this to sew the ear to the head, either side of where you sewed on the top of the head

Finally you need to embroider the eyes on using the black and white thread, referring to the photo if necessary.

You are permitted to sell finished items but I do ask that you don't re-post this pattern or claim it as your own. Also please could you not republish these photos as your own(not that you'd really want to as they're pretty bad quality).

Bear hat

Most of my designs I've created so far are hats based on the same basic hat pattern I found on the repeat crafter me blog. This is the most basic design I've created yet as there's only a few extra bits to sew on.

(sorry about the picture quality)

Difficulty:
Easy

You will need:

  • 5mm(H) crochet hook
  • Aran or worsted weight yarn (either will work) in turquoise (m) (or whichever colour you want the main body of the bear to be) and White/cream (c) (or whatever colour you want the muzzle to be)
  • Black aran or worsted weight yarn
  • darning needle to sew up

The pattern for the main part of the hat can be found here:
http://www.repeatcrafterme.com/2013/10/crochet-giraffe-hat-pattern.html

The giraffe hat is probably my favourite out of the many, many designs on the blog, and there are lots of different sizes to choose from. The hat I made was for a toddler/pre-schooler.

For the ears (make 2):
using make a magic loop with 6 sc
Round 1: Work 2sc in each st (12sc)
Round 2: sc in 1st st, then 2sc in next st, rep to end (18sc)
Round 3: sc in first 2 sts, then 2sc in next st, rep to end (24sc)
Rounds 4-8: (5 rounds) sc in each st (24sc)
Round 9: sc in first 2 sts, then sc2tog, rep to end (18sc)
ss and fasten off, leaving a long tail. Use this to sew the ears onto the top of the hat, using whip stitch to hold them in place.

For the muzzle:
using c make a magic loop with 6 sc
Round 1: Work 2sc in each st (12sc)
Round 2: sc in 1st st, then 2sc in next st, rep to end (18sc)
Round 3: sc in first 2 sts, then 2sc in next st, rep to end (24sc)
Round 4: sc in first 3 sts, then 2sc in next st, rep to end (30sc)
Round 5: sc in first 4 sts, then 2sc in next st, rep to end (36sc)
Round 6: sc in each st around (36sc)
ss and fasten off. Sew onto the hat, using back-stitch to secure it.

For the nose:
using black, ch9
Row 1: sc in 2nd ch from
Row 2: sc2tog, sc in next 4 sts, sc2tog
Row 3: sc in each st
Row 4: sc2tog, sc in next 2 sts, sc2tog
Row 5: sc in each st
Row 6: sc2tog twice
Row 7: sc2tog
Fasten off leaving a long tail which you can use to sew it onto the hat
Whip stitch the nose on and embroider the mouth underneath it, referring to the picture below if necessary.

For the eyes:
with black make a magic loop with 5 sc and ss into the 1st sc.
Fasten off and sew the eyes on just above the muzzle using the loose yarn end and a whip stitch

For the Tassels:
I used three lengths of white and three lengths of turquoise yarn for each tassel, and cut them to approximately 70cm (27.5 inches) to create tassels that are about 28cm (11 inches) long after you've folded them in half, plaited and knotted them. I used the extra yarn from the end of the ear flaps the sew the lengths of yarn in place before plaiting them. this makes it more secure and means that you don't have to sew in as many loose ends.

You are permitted to sell finished items but I do ask that you don't re-post this pattern or claim it as your own. Also please could you not republish these photos as your own(not that you'd really want to as they're pretty bad quality).

I hope you enjoyed this pattern and there will be more coming soon if you're interested.
