Anatomical spine

This pattern is the fourth in a series of bones I have been making that will join together to make a full 1/5th size scale anatomically correct skeleton. The previous patterns are for the skull, the hands, and the feet

These vertebrae are quite complicated and fiddly and so I have included many photos (especially for the first few) to explain how they are made. These photos are taken of a copy of the vertebrae made with a larger hook and yarn to make it easier to see what I am doing. (There are a LOT of photos included, some possibly not strictly necessary, so sorry if you find yourself scrolling through endless images of crocheted vertebrae)

If you have any questions about any part of this pattern please get in contact with  me. If you want a response quickly you can contact me via my Instagram page, otherwise leave a comment below or message me on Ravelry.

If you think you have found any problems with any parts of this pattern please let me know. I did check most of the vertebra, but there are so many that I can't guarantee they're all correct. However, if you let me know if you find an issue I'll get round to sorting it out asap. Thank you!

Difficulty:

difficult

However, if you are keen to make this spine but are intimidated by the difficulty you could make them in a larger size using dk yarn and a 2.5mm hook. I would say the bones themselves are probably medium difficulty - most of the trickiness is from them being so fiddly.

You will need:

  • A 0.6mm crochet hook
  • regular sewing cotton in white and beige
  • A regular sewing needle
  • A small amount of toy stuffing
  • A cocktail stick (this is useful for pushing the stuffing into your crochet since the vertebrae are very small)

Note:

  • I haven't split the patterns for all of the vertebrae up into rounds, largely because there didn't seem to be a particularly easy way of doing this. If you are unsure about any parts of this pattern or feel that they may be incorrect, please contact me via my Instagram page (or leave a comment below if it's less urgent) and I will try to help you out in any way I can.
  • To make my patterns easier to read, in most cases instead f writing 'sc in the next ... sts' I have just written 'sc...' Eg. 'sc12' means 'sc in the next 12 sts'
  • 'fasten off neatly' refers to a special way of fastening off which is neater and makes it easier to see where you should be crocheting on the next round (also known as invisible fastening off). This involves pulling up your yarn through your stitch, threading the yarn underneath the second stitch from where you pulled your yarn up, then threading your yarn back through the top of this stitch and down through the back of the work. There is a very helpful site that explains it clearly found here. Just make sure when you do this that you thread your needle through the SECOND stitch after the last stitch you made, otherwise you will end up with an extra stitch which may mean that all of the following rounds are out of line with each other. This fake stitch you create is then referred to as the 'new' st for the rest of the pattern.

Part 1: cervical vertebrae
For the Atlas bone:

(Make 2 of this first little section, I will refer to these as 'the round sections')
ch3
Round 1: sc in the 2nd st from hook, make 3sc in the next chain st (the first one you made, then make 2sc in the back loop of the previous chain st you crocheted into (6sc)
Round 2: make 2sc in each st (12sc)
Round 3: sc in each st
Fasten off neatly

ch5
Sc in the 2nd chain st from hook, sc in each of the next 3 chain sts (Image 1), then sc in the st after the 'new' st on one of the round sections (Image 2). Sc in each of the next 9sts on this round section, then sc the back of each of the 4 chain sts you previously crocheted up (Image 3). Sc in the new st of the other round section (Image 5), sc in the next 9sts. Fasten off neatly, passing the thread under the 2nd st of this last round you made, and making a new st over the top of the first st of this round, thus joining this last round in a loop, as shown below (Images 6-8)

For the Axis bone:
This bone consists of many smaller pieces that are made first and added later on. Make sure you keep track of these pieces and label them if necessary. (Note: I have abbreviated some parts of the bone but these are not official abbreviations)

The next 4 vertebrae are very similar, and are all similar to the axis vertebra, but without the dens. I have combined the superior articular facet and inferior articular process, and I have called this section the articular process (AP).I have included a lot less photos for C3 than I did for the Atlas and Axis, since many of the trickier bits are the same as for these bones. If you are unsure about any things or think I should have included more photos please let me know and I will try to help!

For C3:
For the AP (Make 2):
ch5
Round 1: Hdc in the 3rd chain st from hook, hdc in the next chain st, make 3hdc in the first chain st you made, hdc in the back of the previous chain st you crocheted into, then make 2hdc in the first chain st you crocheted into. (8hdc)
Fasten off neatly in the same way as you did for the IAP of the axis vertebra.

For the SP:
Make a magic loop with 4sc
Round 1 - 3: (3 rounds)sc in each st
Round 4: (sc, make 2sc in the next st) twice (6sc)
Fasten off neatly

For the body and remainder of the vertebra:

(The first part of this round is done in a very similar way to the first part of round 8 of the axis vertebra)

Note: If you are struggling to be able to find the 'new' st of the AP, you just need to crochet in the lower 5 sts of the section, indicated in purple in Image 1:
image.png
Image 1
Round 6: ch1, turn your crochet over, and sc5 along the underneath of the section, as show in Image 2/3. To make up:
sandwich these disks between the body section of each of these vertebrae, and sew into place. The curvature of the spine can be achieved by pulling certain sections of the spine taught using sewing cotton. You should do this at the front of the vertebrae in the middle of the spine, and at the back when working at the top and bottom of the spine.

The pattern for the Coccyx seen at the bottom will be included in the next pattern I publish in the skeleton series.

  1. Hello! you don't know how excited I am to find a pattern for crocheting an atlas! Thank you so much for sharing! I am a bit lost after connecting the two round sections. Do you have any video teachings available?
Thank you so much for your time!
