This is the third installment of the anatomically correct skeleton I have made, and am gradually uploading the pattern for. All the bones are made to 1/5 size scale. The previous 2 patterns have been the skull and the hands, and I'm hoping to have the spine pattern ready within the next few weeks. If you'd like a sneak preview of what the pattern is going to look like once I've uploaded all of it, be sure to scroll down to the very bottom of this post!
Difficulty:
Medium - difficult
Just like the hand the stitches themselves aren't too complicated but the many of the bones are very fiddly as they are so small. You will need:
- White regular sewing cotton
- #8 crochet cotton
- A 0.6mm crochet hook
- 0.8mm crochet hook
- A regular sewing needle
- Toy stuffing
- A cocktail stick
- "sc12" means "sc in each of the next 12 sts"
- Whilst you are making each bone, try to stuff it as you go along, using the cocktail stick to push the stuffing into your crochet. Try to stuff each of the bones firmly so that they hold their shape.
For the intermediate (second) cuneiform (make 2):
With a 0.6mm hook and regular sewing cotton ch4
Round 1: sc in the 2nd chain st from hook. sc in the next chain st, then make 3sc in the last chain st (the first one you made.) sc in the back of the previous chain st you crocheted into, then make 2sc in the back of the first chain st you crocheted into (8sc)

To make up:
For the toes:
Lay out all of the toes in their correct orientation (indicated in the diagram below)
For each of the foot bones attach your thread to the distal phalange and thread your needle down through each of the bones in turn
For the foot bones (starting with the left foot):
Lay out the Talus on your worksurface
position the navicular underneath the end of it as shown in the diagram below, and sew it in place
Next you will need to sew the cuneiforms together. Lay out the medial (first) cuneiform so that it points downwards as shown below:
Position the intermediate cuneiform beside it
Position the lateral cuneiform next to the intermediate cuneiform, then sew all these cuneiforms together.
You will next need to sew these cuneiform bones to the talus.
First position the Talus and navicular as shown below, with the cuneiforms underneath.
Turn the talus towards you and then sew the cuneiforms to the navicular in this position.
the cuneiforms are shown medial to lateral above going from left to right |
Sew it in place (turning it to the right it should look as shown below). Note that the cuneiforms should be sewn slightly behind the navicular.
medial cuneiform is shown in front of the other cuneiforms |
After this you will need to sew the cuboid in place. This goes on the edge of the foot next to the lateral cuneiform, as shown below.
Finally you will need to attach the calcaneus. This is pretty tricky (an honestly I'm not entirely sure I've go the positioning right myself) but it should be able to slot around the other bones.
Try to position the calcaneus as shown below:
Place the rest of the bones on top of this so that they fit neatly in place as in the diagrams below.
This is all the foot bones in position, and you will then need to attach the toes.
Start with the big toe, and sew this to the end of the medial cuneiform.
Next sew the next toe along to the intermediate cuneiform
After this sew the following toe to the lateral cuneiform
Finally sew both of the last two toes to the cuboid bone of the foot.
After this you should repeat this process for the right foot, carrying out the instructions in mirror image using the right talus and calcaneus. The bones should look like below before you sew the toes in place.

Before you go, I'm aware that these last few skeleton patterns have been a bit disjointed, so I'd like to share with you what the final skeleton should look like once all the patterns have been published and put together.
