Bear hat

Most of my designs I've created so far are hats based on the same basic hat pattern I found on the repeat crafter me blog. This is the most basic design I've created yet as there's only a few extra bits to sew on.

(sorry about the picture quality)

Difficulty:
Easy

You will need:

  • 5mm(H) crochet hook
  • Aran or worsted weight yarn (either will work) in turquoise (m) (or whichever colour you want the main body of the bear to be) and White/cream (c) (or whatever colour you want the muzzle to be)
  • Black aran or worsted weight yarn
  • darning needle to sew up

The pattern for the main part of the hat can be found here:
http://www.repeatcrafterme.com/2013/10/crochet-giraffe-hat-pattern.html

The giraffe hat is probably my favourite out of the many, many designs on the blog, and there are lots of different sizes to choose from. The hat I made was for a toddler/pre-schooler.

For the ears (make 2):
using make a magic loop with 6 sc
Round 1: Work 2sc in each st (12sc)
Round 2: sc in 1st st, then 2sc in next st, rep to end (18sc)
Round 3: sc in first 2 sts, then 2sc in next st, rep to end (24sc)
Rounds 4-8: (5 rounds) sc in each st (24sc)
Round 9: sc in first 2 sts, then sc2tog, rep to end (18sc)
ss and fasten off, leaving a long tail. Use this to sew the ears onto the top of the hat, using whip stitch to hold them in place.

For the muzzle:
using c make a magic loop with 6 sc
Round 1: Work 2sc in each st (12sc)
Round 2: sc in 1st st, then 2sc in next st, rep to end (18sc)
Round 3: sc in first 2 sts, then 2sc in next st, rep to end (24sc)
Round 4: sc in first 3 sts, then 2sc in next st, rep to end (30sc)
Round 5: sc in first 4 sts, then 2sc in next st, rep to end (36sc)
Round 6: sc in each st around (36sc)
ss and fasten off. Sew onto the hat, using back-stitch to secure it.

For the nose:
using black, ch9
Row 1: sc in 2nd ch from
Row 2: sc2tog, sc in next 4 sts, sc2tog
Row 3: sc in each st
Row 4: sc2tog, sc in next 2 sts, sc2tog
Row 5: sc in each st
Row 6: sc2tog twice
Row 7: sc2tog
Fasten off leaving a long tail which you can use to sew it onto the hat
Whip stitch the nose on and embroider the mouth underneath it, referring to the picture below if necessary.

For the eyes:
with black make a magic loop with 5 sc and ss into the 1st sc.
Fasten off and sew the eyes on just above the muzzle using the loose yarn end and a whip stitch

For the Tassels:
I used three lengths of white and three lengths of turquoise yarn for each tassel, and cut them to approximately 70cm (27.5 inches) to create tassels that are about 28cm (11 inches) long after you've folded them in half, plaited and knotted them. I used the extra yarn from the end of the ear flaps the sew the lengths of yarn in place before plaiting them. this makes it more secure and means that you don't have to sew in as many loose ends.

You are permitted to sell finished items but I do ask that you don't re-post this pattern or claim it as your own. Also please could you not republish these photos as your own(not that you'd really want to as they're pretty bad quality).

I hope you enjoyed this pattern and there will be more coming soon if you're interested.
