Little gnome

This pattern is quite similar in its basic shape to many of my other little animals (a full list can be found here)



(he should have shoes but they got lost)






















Difficulty:

medium


You will need:

  • A 2.5mm crochet hook
  • dk yarn in black, cream/peach and red
  • Fluffy white dk yarn
  • blue 4ply yarn 
  • Toy stuffing
  • A darning needle (or similar) for sewing up
  • golden embroidery thread
  • 1.5mm crochet hook


For the head and body (starting from the base):
Make a magic loop with 6sc
Round 1: 2sc in each st (12sc)
Round 2: sc in the first st, 2sc in the next st, rep  to end (18sc)
Round 3: sc in the first 2 sts, 2sc in the next st, rep to end. ch1, turn (24sc)
Rounds 4 - 8: (5 rounds) sc in each st (24sc)
Round 9: sc in the first 2 sts, sc2tog, rep to end (18sc)
Round 10: sc in the first st, sc2tog, rep to end (12sc)
Round 11: sc in the first st, sc2tog, rep to end (8sc)
Round 12: 2sc in each st (16sc)
Round 13: sc in each st
Round 14: sc in the first 3 sts, 2sc in the next st, rep to end (20sc)
Round 15: sc in each st
Round 16: sc in the first 4 sts, 2sc in the next st, rep to end (24sc)
Rounds 17 - 18: (2 rounds) sc in each st
Round 19: sc in the first 2 sts, sc2tog, rep to end (18sc)
Round 20: sc in the first st, sc2tog, rep to end (12sc)
Round 21: sc2tog to end (6sc)
Fasten off


For the arms (make 2):
Make a magic loop with 6sc
Round 1: sc in the first st, 2sc in the next st, rep to end (9sc)
Rounds 2 - 3: (2 rounds) sc in each st (9sc)
Round 4: sc in the first st, sc2tog, rep to end (6sc)
Rounds 5 - 9: (5 rounds) sc in each st (6sc)
Fasten off


Sew the arms to the side of the body

For the legs (make 2):

Make a magic loop with 6sc
Round 1: 2sc in each st (12sc)
Round 2: sc in the first 3 sts, 2cs in the next st, rep to end (15sc)
Rounds 3- 4: (2 rounds) sc in each st (15sc)
Round 5: sc2tog 3 times, sc in the last 9 sts (12sc)
Round 6: sc in the first 2 sts, sc2tog, rep to end (9sc)
Rounds 7 - 10: (4 rounds) sc in each st (9sc)
Fasten off

Sew these legs underneath the body

For the nose:
make a magic loop with 6sc
Round 1: 3sc in the first st, sc in the next 5
Fasten off

Sew this nose to the middle of the face

For the cheeks (make 2):
Make a magic loop with 6sc
Round 1: sc in each st

Sew the cheeks to the face

for the first ear:
make a magic loop with 4sc, but don't join
Row 1: ch1, turn. sc in first 3sts, hdc in next st
Fasten off

For the second ear:
make a magic loop with 4sc, but don't join
Row 2: ch2, turn. hdc, sc in next 3sts
Fasten off

Sew the ears to the sides of the head

For the beard:
With fluffy white yarn fsc19
Row 1: slip the first 4sts, ch1, sc in the next 11sts
Row 2: ch1, turn. slip the first 3sts, ch1, sc in the next 4sts
Fasten off
Sew the beard to the face

For the hair:
with fluffy white yarn fsc20
sc in the first 3, sc2tog  rep to end
sc in the first 2, sc2tog  rep to end
sc in the first st, sc2tog  rep to end
sc2tog to end
sc4tog
fasten off
sew to back of head




For the hat:
With red dk yarn ch28
Round 1: sc in the first chain st, sc in each following chain st to end (28sc)
Rounds 2 - 5: (4 rounds) sc in each st
Round 6: sc in the first 5sts, sc2tog, rep to end (24sc)
Rounds 7 - 8: (2 rounds)
Round 9: sc in the first 4sts, sc2tog, rep to end (20sc)
Rounds 10 - 12: (2 rounds)
Round 13: sc in the first 3sts, sc2tog, rep to end (16sc)
Rounds 14 - 15: (2 rounds)
Round 16: sc in the first 2sts, sc2tog, rep to end (12sc)
Round 17: sc in each st
Round 18: sc in the first st, sc2tog, rep to end (8sc)
Round 19: sc in each st
Round 20: sc2tog around (4sc)
Fasten off

Sew this hat to the head

Embroider eyes and a mouth onto your gnome


For the shirt:
with blue 4ply yarn fsc26 
Row 1: ch1, turn. sc2tog, sc in the next 22sts, sc2tog (24sc)
Round 2: sc in each st (24sc)
Round 3: sc2tog, sc in the next 20sts, sc2tog (22sc)
Round 4: sc in the first st of this last round, sc each of the next 21sts (this makes a loop of crochet)
Round 5: sc in each st (22sc)
Round 6: sc in the first 5sts, 2sc in the next st, sc in the next 10 sts, 2sc in the next st, sc in the last 5sts (24sc)
Round 7: sc in each st (24sc)
Round 8: sc in the first 5sts, 2sc in the next st, sc in the following 12sts, 2sc in the next st, sc in the last 5sts (26sc)
Round 9: sc in each (26sc)
Round 10: sc in the first 13sts. ch1, turn (this isn't one full round it just helps to line things up)
Round 11: sc in each st (26sc)
Round 12: sc in the first 6sts, sc2tog, sc in the next 10sts, sc2tog, sc in the next 6sts (24sc)
Round 13: sc in the first 5sts, sc2tog, sc in the next 10sts, sc2tog, sc in the last 5sts (22sc)
Round 14: sc in the first 3sts, ch6, skip4 from base of chain, sc in the next 8sts, ch6, skip4 from base of chain, sc in the next 3sts
Fasten off

For the sleeves (make one on each side of the shirt):
sc13 around the armhole
Rounds 1 - 7: (7 rounds) sc in each st (13sc)
Fasten off



For the collar:
sc27 around the top of the shirt. ch1, turn
sc2, sc2tog 11 times, sc3
Fasten off

For the belt:
fsc22

For the buckle:
with golden embroidery thread and a 1.5mm crochet hook crochet a small chain, sew it into a loop and sew it to the middle of the belt.
Sew the belt around the middle of the shirt, with the buckle at the centre front.

Put the shirt on the gnome. Sew a button onto the top of the back of the shirt and attach a length of thread to act as a button loop

For the boots: (make 2):
Round 1: make a magic loop with 6sc
Round 2: 2sc in each st (12sc)
Round 3: sc in the first st, 2sc in the next st, rep to end (18sc)
Round 4: sc in the first 2sts, 2sc in the next st, rep to end (24sc)
fasten off neatly

Round 5: rejoin yarn and sc in the back loop of each st
Round 6: sc in the first 5sts, sc2tog 3 times, sc in the last 13sts (21sc)
Round 7: sc in each st (21sc)
Round 8: sc in the first 3sts, sc2tog, sc3tog, sc2tog, sc in the last 11sts (17sc)
Rounds 9 - 11: (3 rounds) sc in each st (17sc)
Fasten off

Put these boots on your gnome
