Multicoloured giraffe

This giraffe is made in the colours of the queer pride flag (see below), although you can customise it to whatever colours you want.

Difficulty:

Easy - medium

You will need:

• A 2.5mm crochet hook
• Dk yarn in white, black, light blue, blue, light green, orange-yellow, red-pink and light pink (sor whatever other colours you want to use) 
• Polyester toy stuffing
• A darning needle
• A scrap of white embroidery thread and an embroidery needle

For the body:

With white ch4

Round 1: sc in the 2nd chain st from hook and the next chain st. Make 3sc in the first chain st you made, then sc in the back of the previous chain st you crocheted into. Make 2sc in the back of the first chain st you crocheted into (8sc)
Round 2: make 2sc in the first st, sc, make 2sc in each of the next 3sts, sc, make 2sc in each of the last 2sts (14sc)

Round 3: sc, make 2sc in the next st, sc, (sc, make 2sc in the following st) 3 times, sc, (sc, make 2sc in the next st) twice (20sc)

Round 4: sc2, make 2sc in the next st, sc, (sc2, make 2sc in the following st) 3 times, sc, (sc2, make 2sc in the next st) twice (26sc)

Rounds 5 - 8: (4 rounds) sc in each st

Round 9: sc2, sc2tog, sc, (sc2, sc2tog) 3 times, sc, (sc2, sc2tog) twice (20sc)

Rounds 10 - 12: (3 rounds) sc in each st

Round 13: sc14, (sc, make 2sc in the next st) 3 times (23sc)

Rounds 14 - 15: (2 rounds) sc in each st

Round 16: Sc4, make 2sc in the next st, sc4, make 2sc in the following st, sc13 (25sc)
Rounds 17 - 20: (4 rounds) Sc in each st
Round 21: (Sc2, sc2tog) twice, sc3, (sc2, sc2tog) 3 times, sc2 (20sc)
Round 22: Sc, (sc, sc2tog) 3 times, sc, (sc, sc2tog) 3 times (14sc)
Round 23: Sc2tog 3 times, sc, sc2tog 3 times, sc (8sc)
Fasten off

Stuff


For the neck:
With white ch20

Round 1: Sc in the first chain st you made and every following chain st
Round 2: (Sc2, sc2tog) 5 times (15sc)
Round 3: (Sc3, sc2tog) 3 times (12sc)
Round 4: sc in each st
Round 5: (Sc4, sc2tog) twice (10sc)
Rounds 6 - 15: (10 rounds) sc in each st
Fasten off

Stuff and sew to the body (the cast-on edge should be at the bottom)


For the legs (make 4):
With white make a magic loop with 6sc
Round 1: make 2sc in each st (12sc)
Round 2: Sc in each st
Round 3: (Sc4, sc2tog) twice (10sc)
Round 4: (Sc3, sc2tog) twice (8sc)
Rounds 5 - 8: (4 rounds) Sc in each st
Round 9: (sc3, make 2sc in the next st) twice (10sc)
Round 10: (sc4, make 2sc in the next st) twice (12sc)
Round 11: sc in each st
Fasten off

Stuff and sew these to the underside of the body

For the hooves (make 4):
With black make a magic loop with 6sc
Round 2: make 2sc in each st (12sc)
Round 3: (sc3, make 2sc in the next st) 3 times (15sc)
Round 4: Sc2tog, sc13 (14sc)
Round 5: Sc4, sc2tog, sc8 (13sc)
Round 6: Sc7, sc2tog, sc3 (12sc)
Fasten off

Stuff and sew to the bottom of the legs


For the head:
Ch5
Round 1: Sc in the 2nd chain st from hook and the next 2 chain sts. Make 3sc in the first chain st you made, then sc in the back of the previous 2 chain sts youy crocheted into. Make 2sc in the back of the first chain st you crochted into (10sc)
Round 2: make 2sc in the first st, sc2, make 2sc in each of the next 3sts, sc2, make 2sc in each of the next 2sts (16sc)
Round 3: sc, make 2sc in the next st, sc2, (sc, make 2sc in the next st) 3 times, sc2, (sc, make 2sc in the next st) twice (22sc)
Rounds 4 - 6: (3 rounds) Sc in each st
Round 7: (make 2sc in the first st, sc10) twice (24sc)
Round 8: (make 3sc in the first st, sc11) twice (28sc)
Rounds 9 - 10: (2 rounds) Sc in each st
Round 11: Sc2tog, (Sc2, sc2tog) sc2, (sc2, sc2tog) 3 times, sc2, sc2, sc2tog, sc2 (22sc)
Round 12: Sc2tog, (Sc, sc2tog) sc2, (sc, sc2tog) 3 times, sc2, sc, sc2tog, sc (16sc)
Round 13: Sc2tog twice, sc2, sc2tog 3 times, sc2tog (10sc)
Round 14: Sc2tog 4 times (5sc)
Fasten off

Stuff and sew this to the neck

For the ears (make 2):
With white make a magic loop with 6sc
Round 1: make 2sc in the first st, sc2, make 2sc in the next st, sc2 (8sc)
Round 2: make 2sc in the first st, sc3, make 2sc in the next st, sc3 (10sc)
Rounds 3 - 4: (2 rounds) Sc in each st
Round 5: Sc3tog, sc2, sc3tog, sc2
Fasten off

Sew to the sides of the head

For the snout:
With white ch4
Sc8 around
Round 2: make 2sc in the first st, sc, make 2sc in each of the next 3sts, sc, make 2sc in each of the next 2sts (14sc)
Round 3: Sc in each st
Fasten off neatly

Sew this to the face

With white ch3
Row 1: make 3sc in the 2nd chain st from hook and the next chain st (6sc)
Row 2: (Sc, make 2sc in the next st) 3 times (9sc)
Fasten off

Sew this underneath the previous section to act as a mouth.

Use black yarn to embroider 2 vertical stripes for the nostrils.

For the tail:
With white ch6
Fasten off

With light pink make a magic loop with 6sc
Round 1: (sc, make 2sc in the next st) 3 times (9sc)
Rounds 2 - 3: (2 rounds) sc in each st
Round 4: (sc, sc2tog) 3 times (6sc)
Round 5: Sc2tog 3 times (3sc)
Round 6: Hdc
Fasten off

Sew this to the end of the chain section, then sew the tail to the body




For the horns (make 2):
With black make a magic loop with 6sc
Round 1: (sc, make 2sc in the next st) 3 times (9sc)
Round 2: Sc in each st
Round 3: (sc, sc2tog) 3 times (6sc)

Fasten off
Rejoin with white yarn
Rounds 4 - 7: (4 rounds) sc in each st
Fasten off

For the eyes (make 2):
With white ch4
Round 1: sc in the 2nd chain st from hook and the next chain st. Make 3sc in the first chain st you made, then sc in the back of the previous chain st you crocheted into. Make 2sc in the back of the first chain st you crocheted into (8sc)
Round 2: make 2sc in the first st, sc, make 2sc in each of the next 3sts, sc, make 2sc in each of the last 2sts (14sc)
Fasten off neatly

With light blue ch5

Round 1: sc in the 2nd chain st from hook and the next 2 chain sts. Make 3sc in the first chain st you made, then sc in the back of the previous 2 chain sts you crocheted into. Make 2sc in the back of the first chain st you crocheted into (10sc)
Fasten off neatly

With black ch4
Round 1: sc in the 2nd chain st from hook and the next chain st. Make 3sc in the first chain st you made, then sc in the back of the previous chain st you crocheted into. Make 2sc in the back of the first chain st you crocheted into (8sc)
Fasten off neatly

Sew these to the irises and add highlights using white embroidery thread

For the mane:

Cut a strip of cardboard 

With blue yarn 5cm wide and wind light blue and blue yarn around it mulitple times. Cut along one side so you get a number of 10cm long strips, then attach these to the head and neck of your giraffe. The strands should be attached by folding them in half and using a crochet hook to pull the looped end through a stitch in the crochet, before feeding the free ends through this loop (for more detail see this pattern).

Finally you need to embroider the spots on
