Frog

 Difficulty:

medium

You will need:

  • a 2.5mm crochet hook
  • dk yarn in black and green (I used a hand - dyed yarn to create a mottled effect)
  • toy stuffing
  • a darning needle (or similar)

For the head and body (starting from the base):

With green make a magic loop with 6sc
Round 1: 2sc in each st (12sc)
Round 2: sc in the first st, 2sc in the next st, rep  to end (18sc)
Round 3: sc in the first 2 sts, 2sc in the next st, rep to end. ch1, turn (24sc)
Rounds 4 - 8: (5 rounds) sc in each st (24sc)
Round 9: sc in the first 2 sts, sc2tog, rep to end (18sc)
Round 10: sc in the first st, sc2tog, rep to end (12sc)
Round 11: sc in the first st, sc2tog, rep to end (8sc)
Rounds 12 - 13: (2 rounds) sc in each st (8sc)
Round 14: 2sc in each st (16sc)
Round 15: sc in the first 2 sts, 2sc in each of the next 3 sts, sc in the following 6sts, 2sc in each of the next 3 sts, sc in the last 2 sts (22sc)
Round 16: sc in the first 4sts , 2sc in each of the next 3sts, sc in the following 8sts, 2sc in each of the next 3, sc in the last 4 sts (28sc)
Rounds 17 - 20: (4 rounds) sc in each st (28sc)
Round 21: sc in the first 6sts, sc2tog 3 times, sc in the next 8sts, sc2tog 3 times, sc in the last 2 sts (22sc)
Round 22: sc in the first 4 sts, sc2tog 3 times, sc in the next 6 sts, sc2tog 3 times (16sts)
Stuff
Round 23: sc in the first 3 sts, skip the next 8 sts, sc in the following st, sc in the next 5 sts (9sc)
These last 9sts make a small new round that will form the bumps on the frog's head
Rounds 24 - 25: (2 rounds) sc in each of these 9 sts
Round 26: sc, sc2tog, rep 3 times to end (6sc)
Fasten off
Rejoin yarn to the same stitch you crocheted into on round 22, sc 8 around, slip the first st of this round (this makes a new loop of 9sts)
Round 24: sc in the same st and the next 8 sts
Round 25: sc in each of these 9 sts,
Round 26: sc, sc2tog, rep 3 times to end (6sc)
Fasten off

For the toes (make 12):
make a magic loop with 4sc
Rounds 1-2: (2 rounds) sc in each st
fasten off neatly (fasten off by threading the loose yarn underneath the 2nd st from the final stitch and then back through the original stitch (a full explanation can be found here under the needle-join method))

For the 'hands' (make 2):
crochet 3 of the toes together (attach yarn to one stitch of one of the toes. sc in this st and the next 2sts. sc in one st of a different toe, and one stitch of another different toe. sc in the next two stitches of this toe, then sc into the 2nd st after the st you crocheted into in the 2nd toe, then make a slip stitch into the stitch you fastened your yarn onto.)
A diagram showing the order of stitches you should crochet into to make the hand / feet. Attach yarn to red stitch, then crochet around the diagram in order of rainbow order (with pink being an honorary 8th colour in the rainbow), finally making a slip stitch in the red stitch.

Round 1: sc in the first st, sc2tog, sc in the next 2 sts, sc2tog, sc in the last st (6sc)
Round 2: sc in the first 2sts, slip 2, sc in the next 2sts (6sts)
Round 3: sc in the first st, slip the next 4sts, sc in the next st (6sts)
Round 4: sc in the first 2sts, slip the next 3sts, sc in the last st (6sts)
Rounds 5 - 6: (2 rounds) sc in each st
Fasten off

For the 'legs' (make 2):
crochet 3 of the toes together (see above)
Rounds 1 - 2: (2 rounds) sc in each of these 8sts (8sc)
Round 3: sc in the first st, sc2tog, sc in the next 2sts, sc2tog, sc in the last st (6sc)
Round 4: sc in the first st, slip the next 4sts, sc in the last st (6sts)
Round 5: sc3, slip2, sc
Round 6: sc2, slip4
Round 7: sc3, slip2, sc
Rounds 8 - 11: (4 rounds) sc in each st
Fasten off neatly
make a magic loop with 6sc
Rounds 1 - 5: (5 rounds) sc in each st
Round 6: sc in the first st after the 'new' st you made on the first section of the leg
sc in the next 3 sts, sc in the 2nd part of leg you made, in the 3rd st after where you last crocheted, sc in the next 3 sts (8sc)
this diagram shows the order of stitches you should crochet into. The  purple stitch represents the last stitch you crocheted into in row 5. The black stitch represents the 'new' stitch you made when fastening off the first part of the leg you made. Starting from the stitch highlighted in red, you should crochet into the stitches above in order of the colours as they appear in the rainbow (red, orange, yellow, light green, dark green, turquoise, blue and purple)
Round 7: sc2tog 4 times (4sc)
Fasten off

Sew the 'arms' and 'legs'; onto your frog then embroider facial features onto the face using black yarn

Sew the legs to the side of the body. You may want to sew the two bits of the leg you made seperately and then crocheted together together further down so they stay in place.
