Little 13th Doctor (Doctor who)

With series 11 of Doctor Who fast approaching (It is set to air on October 7th), I thought it would be fitting to make a crocheted model of Jodie Whittaker.

This little doll of the 13th Doctor (AKA Jodie Whittaker) is designed to be the same size as all of the other animals in my 'little animals' collection, and so will fit into the clothes made for those animals, and vice - versa (as you can see with the little rabbit above)

Difficulty:

medium

You will need:

  • Dk yarn in grey, peach (or a suitable skin colour), and very light yellow
  • 4ply yarn in light(ish) blue, dark blue, and brown
  • Embroidery thread in red, orange, yellow, very light green, green, browny-green, blue, dark blue, purple, black, white, silver, grey, and dark brown
  • A 2.5mm crochet hook
  • A 2mm crochet hook
  • A 1.5mm crochet hook
  • Toy stuffing
  • 2 knitting needles
  • A pet brush
  • PVA glue
  • Regular sewing cotton in brown and very light yellow
  • A regular sewing needle, darning needle, and embroidery needle

Note:
  • I have decided to re-jig how I write my patterns to (hopefully) make them easier to read. I am assuming that most people reading this pattern will be reasonably experienced with pattern reading, but hopefully this will make sense even if you are not. If you are confused by any parts of this pattern please leave a comment below and I will try to clarify things for you :) The main change I have made is that instead of writing 'sc in the next ... sts' in many cases I have just written 'sc... Eg. 'sc12' means 'sc in the next 12 sts'
  • 'fasten off neatly' refers to a special way of fastening off which is neater and makes it easier to see where you should be crocheting on the next round (also known as invisible fastening off). This involves pulling up your yarn through your stitch, threading the yarn underneath the second stitch from where you pulled your yarn up, then threading your yarn back through the top of this stitch and down through the back of the work. There is a very helpful site that explains it clearly found here. Just make sure when you do this that you thread your needle through the SECOND stitch after the last stitch you made, otherwise you will end up with an extra stitch which may mean that all of the following rounds are out of line with each other.
  • This pattern includes the back-to-front single crochet stitch (bfsc). A video to show you how to do this can be found here. It's pretty simple but if you can't work it out you can just use a regular single crochet stitch, but this will give it a slightly different look.
  • This pattern also uses the foundation single crochet stitch. A video on how to do this can be found here.
  • The 'loop behind the back loop' refers to the loop known as the 'third loop' in the diagram below

You may find it helpful to use this image as a reference when making the facial features

For the ears (make 2):
With peach dk yarn and a 2mm hook ch3
Row 1: 3Sc in the 2nd chain st from hook, then 3sc in the next chain st st. Fasten off
Sew these to either side of the face.

For the nose:
With 2mm hook ch2
Row 1: Sc in the 2nd chain st from hook. Ch1, turn
Row 2: 2sc in this st. Ch1, turn
Row 3: 2sc in the first st, sc in the next st.
Fasten off
Sew this to the face, trying to make it loop as much Like Jodie Whittaker's as possible.

Make eye sockets by making repeated stitches through the head either side of the nose and pulling the stitching tight.

For the eyes:
Embroider the eyes onto the face.
Using three strands of white embroidery thread embroider the whites of the eyes. Embroider the irises over the top using 2 strands of greeny-brown embroidery thread. Embroider the pupils using one strand of black embroidery thread, then add highlights using one strand of white embroidery thread.

For the earrings: With one strand of silver embroidery thread embroider the earrings onto the ears. Make repeated stitches in both the top and bottom of the left ear in turn. To make the looped effect of the earring leave on of the stitches on the bottom of the ear slightly loose so that it hangs down a little.

For the hair:
cut the cardboard into a strip approx. 22.5cm wide, and wrap the yarn around it approx. 32 times. Cut it at both ends to give you approx.64 strands of light yellow yarn half as long (around 11.25cm)
attach these to a knitting needle 2 at a time by folding the bundle of two in half and looping the yarn around the needle, then threading the loose ends through the looped end. You may need to use two knitting needles to allow the strands to be spread out.
Use a pet brush to brush out the yarn until it is smooth. Start at the ends and gradually work your way up until you have brushed all of the tangles out. It will be very fluffy. To make it straighter boil a kettle full of hot water and empty it into a saucepan so that it fills right up to the top. Place the knitting needles with the yarn wefts on into the boiling water, then take them out and leave them to dry.

To ten of these strands take a brown sharpie and colour in the top 1.5 cm.

After you've done this take a paintbrush and some glue and apply glue to the top 0.75cm (ish) to all of the strands. Apply it to both sides all the way around, trying to get it into the middle if possible. Leave the glue to dry.

Once the glue is dry cut the top of the strands just underneath where they are attached to the knitting needles, so that you have 32 individual strands.

Next you need to sew these to the head. Start with the ones you coloured slightly brown, and attach these to the head by sewing them on using a sewing needle and brown thread, and sewing over the glued section of each strand. Sew them to the front and centre of the head. Sew them so that originally they face the opposite direction that you want them to be, so that when you then fold them back on themselves they hide the glued section with the stitching in.

Once you have attached all of the brown strands, attach the other strands to the rest of the head in the same way.

Add eyebrows to the face using brown embroidery thread

For the trousers:
With light(ish) blue 4ply yarn and a 2.5mm hook ch28

Round 1: sc in the first chain st you made, then sc in every following chain st to make a loop (28sc)
Rounds 2 - 7: (6 rounds) sc in each st
Round 8: ch6, skip14, sc14. These last 20 sts form a new round
Rounds 9 - 16: (8 rounds) sc in each of these 20 sts
Fasten off

rejoin yarn to round 7 to the stitch after the stitch you crocheted into before you did the ch6 in round 8 (i.e. the first st of round 7)

Round 8: sc14, ch6
Round 9: sc in the first st you crocheted into in the last round, sc in every following st. These last 20 sts form a new round
Round 10  - 16:(7 rounds) sc in each st
Fasten off

For the waistband:

With light(ish) blue 4ply yarn and a 2.5mm hook fsc 28. ch1, turn
Row 1: bfsc 28
Fasten off

Sew the waistband to the trousers, hiding the join at the back.

For the braces:
With yellow embroidery thread and a 1.5mm crochet hook ch25
Row 1: Sc in the 2nd loop from hook, sc in every following loop. Ch1, turn
Row 2: bfsc24
Fasten off

For the fastenings (make 2 for each brace):

With grey embroidery thread and a 1.5mm hook ch2
Fasten off

Sew these two fastenings to one end of each brace (but try to sew them so that each brace has the fastenings at a different end). After you've done this sew the fastenings to the front of the waistband, spreading them out slightly (as shown below)

Sew the other end of the braces to the centre back of the trousers. Before you do this, put the trousers on the doll and make sure that the braces fit nicely in that position. If not, you may want to sew the back of the braces in a slightly different position so that they fit nicely over the shoulders.

At this stage please ignore all of the bits we haven't covered yet

yellow
orange
red
dark blue

yellow
You don't need to embroider around the whole shirt, just the front, since the back will be hidden by the coat.

With brown 4ply yarn and a 2mm hook ch3
Round 1: sc in the 2nd chain st from hook, make 3sc in the next chain st (the first one you made), then make 2sc in the back of the first chain st you crocheted into (6sc)

Round 3: sc in the first st, 2sc in the next st, rep to end
Fasten off neatly

Rejoin to the loop behind the back loop of the 6th st after the new st you created when fastening off neatly (you will know which on it is because it will tighten when you pull the loose yarn end).
