Baby hoodie

This hoodie is designed to fit a 6-month-old baby (unfortunately I don't have any photos of cute babies in it). It includes a cotton lining in the hood and pockets, but this isn't necessary if you'd prefer to not include it.

Difficulty:

Easy - medium (as long as you keep track of your stitches after every row)

You will need:
  • A 4mm crochet hook
  • 3 x 100g balls of dk yarn (or 5 x 50g balls)
  • A darning needle (or similar)
  • A fat quarter of cotton fabric
  • Sewing cotton to match your fabric
  • A sewing machine (optional)
  • A regular sewing needle
  • A 30 cm open-ended zip
  • White ribbon and black or dark blue sewing cotton (optional)

Gauge:
11 sts and 10 rows per 5cm square

This gauge has been done using a sample made by following the pattern used to make the jumper.
This involves rows of sc, ch1, skip1, where for each row you crochet into the hole made by the ch1, skip1 on the previous row (you will see what I mean when you start making it)
The gauge shouldn't be too important though since the jumper is very stretchy so it should fit even if the gauge isn't exactly the same.

Note:
  •  'sc in the next st' where the next st is a chain st means 'sc in the hole underneath the chain st'
  • '(ch1, skip1, sc) to last st' means '(ch1, skip1, sc) up to but not including the last st'
  • As a rule, the ch1 at the end of the row doesn't count as a stitch, but every other chain stitch does (although a ch2 generally only counts as one stitch)
  • At the end of each row, turn and crochet the next row in the opposite direction
  • Make sure you count the number of stitches you have after every row to make sure it is the number you are supposed to have, since it is very easy to lose stitches.

For the hood lining:
Trace around the outside of one of the hood sections you've just made onto a piece of pattern paper, but add a 1.5cm seam allowance.
This should ideally be done before you make up the hoodie (I just got impatient waiting for the lining fabric to arrive)
Cut this out and pin it onto your fabric, making sure that the pattern on the fabric is the right way up. Cut out two of these shapes from the fabric and pin them together along the curved edge. Sew these together along this edge using a sewing machine, leaving a 1.5cm seam allowance.

Turn over the front edge of the hood by 1.5cm and pin and sew this in place.

For the pocket lining (cut out 2 for each pocket):
Trace around the pockets like you did with the hood, again leaving a 1.5cm seam allowance. Fold over the longer slanted edge on each piece by 1.5cm, and sew it in place.

Pin the two sections together for each pocket and sew them together around all of the other edges. Trim the corners of these sections, then fold these the back and iron them in place

To make up:
Sew the side seams of the front sections to those of the back sections.

Sew up the side seams of the sleeves

Sew the sleeves to the front/ back of the jumper (None cast off edges should be sewn at this point as together they form the neckline)

Sew the curved edges of the hood sections together

Sew the hood to the neckline of the jumper, leaving the cast on edges of the hood sections at the front.

Sew the pockets to the front of the jumper, leaving the longer slanted edge free, but sewing over all of the other edges.

Place the pocket linings inside the pockets and use a needle and thread to slip stitch around the opening to sew the pocket lining to the pocket.

Pin front of the hood lining to the inside of the hood and sew it in place using small slip stitches with a needle and thread. Fold the bottom edge of the hood lining up to hide the raw edge and slip stitch it in place.

For the label:
Cut a section of ribbon approx. 12cm in length and embroider the washing instructions onto the label, along with the age (6 months) using dark blue or black thread.

Roll over the ends of the ribbon until they reach where you have embroidered the label, and use slip stitches to sew these rolled and in place. Sew the label to the jumper.

Pin and sew the zip to the front of the jumper. You can do this either using a sewing machine or by slip stitching it in place.
