Oscar Wilde

This pattern is part of a series of iconic LGBTQ+ characters and people I'm making to celebrate pride month.

Difficulty:
Medium - difficult

You will need:
  • A 2.5mm hook (use this if no hook specified)
  • A 2mm hook
  • A 1mm hook
  • A 0.8mm hook (optional)
  • dk yarn in beige and dark brown (or another suitable skin colour)
  • 4ply yarn in medium brown, dark blue, and light blue
  • #8 crochet cotton in white (optional)
  • #10 crochet cotton in green and black
  • Embroidery thread in light green, turquoise, light blue, black, white, dark brown, and beige (as closely matched to the dk yarn as possible). You will also need 2 skeins of cream, but this can be replaced with cream #8 crochet cotton if you prefer.
  • 3 small dark blue beads (approx. 4-5mm in diameter)
  • Dark brown sewing thread
  • A small snap fastener
  • A darning needle
  • An embroidery needle
  • A regular sewing needle
  • A knitting needle
  • cardboard
  • PVA glue
  • A large bowl or saucepan
  • A pet brush
  • Toy stuffing
  • Scissors

Note:
  • This pattern includes the back-to-front single crochet stitch (bfsc). A video to show you how to do this can be found here. It's pretty simple but if you can't work it out you can just use a regular single crochet stitch, but this will give it a slightly different look.
  • 'fasten off neatly' refers to a special way of fastening off which is neater and makes it easier to see where you should be crocheting on the next round (also known as invisible fastening off). This involves pulling up your yarn through your stitch, threading the yarn underneath the second stitch from where you pulled your yarn up, then threading your yarn back through the top of this stitch and down through the back of the work. There is a very helpful site that explains it clearly found here.

with beige ch3

Round 1: make 3sc in the 2nd chain st from hook, the make 3sc in the following chain st

Sew to the sides of the head

For the nose:
With beige make a magic loop with 1sc. ch1, turn

Row 1: sc in this st. ch1, turn
Roe 2: make 3sc in this st (3sc)
Fasten off

Sew this to the face, then use a strand of yarn to pull back the parts of the head either side of the top of the nose to make eye sockets (this can be done by making repeated stitches through the head and pulling tightly)

 For the eyes:
Embroiderer the whites with white embroidery thread, then add the irises in light blue, before adding the pupils using black.

Add eyelids using the beige embroidery thread.

For the hair:
cut a section of cardboard 8cm wide. Wrap the brown dk yarn repeatedly around the width of this, then cut along the yarn on one end so you have lots of 16cm long strands

Tie the centre of these to a long pole such as a knitting needle, then brush the yarn repeatedly until it is smooth. Boil a kettle full of water, pour it into a saucepan or large bowl, and dip the yarn lengths into the water. Leave somewhere warm to dry out.

After this is done, apply PVA glue to the top of each the the strands, just underneath where they are ties around the needle. Leave to dry, then snip the yarn off just above where you applied the glue.

After this you will need to sew the hair to the head. Start from the top, making the central parting firts. Sew each strand of hair in place so that it it facing upwards, so that it can be folded down to hide the glued section (this is the section you should sew over)

After you've made the parting you should continue to sew the remainder of the hair onto the head in the same way. You may want to use the following image (or any other images you can find online) as a reference.

Once you have attached the hair you will need to shape and cut it. I used a few stitches to hold parts of the hair in place (such as around the ears to make it seem more wavy), then trimmed it to just below the ears.

For the remaining facial features:
Use brown embroidery thread to sew the eyebrows onto the face. I used a single stand and make repeated small stitches, to resemble the individual hairs.

You then need to embroider the mouth using black embroidery thread.

The final thing to do is to sew the head to the neck of the body

This is optional since its not particularly visible underneath the jacket and coat

You then need to add the fur to the collar and the sleeves. Wind the dark brown yarn around a section of cardboard approx. 2cm wide, then cut down one side of it, as you did for the hair. Attach these yarn lengths to the collar and the ends of the sleeve. This should be done by folding each strand in half in turn, pulling the looped end through a stitch in the head, then passing the loose ends through the loop you made to secure it. Photos demonstrating how to do this can be found on the hair section of my David Bowie pattern.

After the collar is covered it should be sewn to the neckline of the coat.
