Ann Walker

Ann Walker lived at the start of the 19th century and is most famous with her relationship with the famous diarist and landowner Anne Lister. She was portrayed by Sophie Rundle in the BBC/HBO series Gentleman Jack. A pattern to make Anne Lister can be found here.

This pattern is part of a series of LGBTQ+ icons I've been making to celebrate pride month. You can see the other projects I've been working on by following my Instagram page.

This pattern is made to be the same size as all of the animals and people in my 'little animals' collection, so the clothes will fit onto most of those animals. A full collection can be found here.

Difficulty:

Medium
The most difficult part of this is the hair, as it is very fiddly

You will need:
  • A 2.5mm crochet hook
  • A 2mm crochet hook
  • A 1mm crochet hook
  • dk yarn in beige
  • 4py yarn in white and golden brown (although dk will also work for the brown, as will a slightly lighter weight)
  • #10 crochet cotton in pink (you will need quite a lot of this)
  • embroidery thread in dark pink, light pink, white, black, turquoise, beige (as closely matched to the skin colour as possible), and golden brown (as closely matched to the hair colour as possible)
  • craft wire
  • Light brown sewing cotton
  • A darning needle
  • An embroidery needle
  • A pet brush

Note:
  • This pattern includes the back-to-front single crochet stitch (bfsc). A video to show you how to do this can be found here. It's pretty simple but if you can't work it out you can just use a regular single crochet stitch, but this will give it a slightly different look.
  • 'fasten off neatly' refers to a special way of fastening off which is neater and makes it easier to see where you should be crocheting on the next round (also known as invisible fastening off). This involves pulling up your yarn through your stitch, threading the yarn underneath the second stitch from where you pulled your yarn up, then threading your yarn back through the top of this stitch and down through the back of the work. There is a very helpful site that explains it clearly found here.

For the ears (make 2):
With a 2mm hook ch3
Row 1: make 3sc in the 2nd loop from hook, then make 3sc in the following chain st
Fasten off

Sew the ears onto the sides of the head, then use repeated stitches through the head either side of the nose to make the eye sockets. Putt the yarn tight so that the crochet is pulled back into the head.

For the eyes:
Start by using white yarn to embroider the whites of the eyes. After this embroider the irises over the top using greeny-blue embroidery thread, before embroidering the pupils in the centre with back embroidery thread. Add eyelids to the upper side of the eye using beige embroidery thread.

For the hair:
Cut a section of cardboard approximately 6cm wide and wind the golden brown yarn around it multiple times. Cut down one side of this so that you have a number of 16cm long strands

Attach 4 or 5 strands to both sides of the head either side of the ear. You should attache them by folding each strand in half and pulling the looped end through a stitch in the head before threading the free ends through this loop you've created (there is a more detailed explanation of this on my David Bowie pattern if you're unsure what I mean).

Use the pet brush to brush these strands of hair to make them smoother, as can be seen below.

You now need to curl up these strands of hair into ringlets on the head. Secure them in place using small stitches with a regular sewing needle and light brown thread.

This process then needs to be repeated just above where you made the first ringlets. Attach several strands of hair just slightly higher up, brush them to make them smoother, then curl them up into ringlets and secure with a few small stitches.

After this you need to attach around 10 strands to the top centre of the head. These will create the hairline, so try to make sure they are arranged in 2 definite rows (although these rows should be very close together). Brush these strands until they are smooth. You then need to flatten them down until they meet the upper row of ringlets and secure them in place with a few stitches. The ends should then be fashioned into a third layer of ringlets just above the first two.

For the final part of the hair, attach yarn to the back of the head, roughly in line with the bottom of the ears, to where the hairline should be. Brush these strands to make them smooth, then fold them up and curl them around into a bun at the back of the head. Secure with small stitches using the light brown sewing cotton.

For the remaining facial features:
Embroider the eyebrows in place using a single strand of golden brown embroidery thread, then add the mouth using back embroidery thread.

For the dress:
For the skirt:
With pink #10 crochet cotton and a 1mm crochet hook ch40
Round 1: sc in the first chain st you made, (ch4, sc in the next 2 chain sts) 19 times, ch4, sc in the last chain st (120sc)
Rounds 2 - 4: (3 rounds) sc in each st
Round 5: (sc7, make 2sc in the next st) 15 times (135sc)
Rounds 6 - 9: (4 rounds) sc in each st
Round 10: (sc4, make 2sc in the next st, sc4) 15 times (150sc)
Rounds 11 - 14: (4 rounds) sc in each st
Round 15: (sc9, make 2sc in the next st) 15 times (165sc)
Rounds 16 - 19: (4 rounds) sc in each st
Round 20: (sc5, make 2sc in the next st, sc5) 15 times (180sc)
Rounds 21 - 22: (2 rounds) sc in each st
Fasten off neatly

You now need to create the pleats in the dress. Sew together the holes caused by all of the ch2 sections on the first round. This should be done in such a way that it creates small ruffles in the skirt (essentially the first chain st should be sewn to the 2nd one)

You then need to sew down the entire length on the inside of each of these ruffles to create a sharp pleat, as can be seen below (the second image shows the inside of the dress)

For the left sleeve:
With #10 crochet cotton and a 1mm hook ch17
Round 1: sc in the first chain st you made, then sc in every following chain st to make a loop

Row 2: bfsc38. ch1, turn
Row 3: sc38
Fasten off

Embroider 2 stripes along the length of this belt with light pink embroidery thread.

For the buckle:
Wind the wire around several times to make a circle with a diameter approximately equal to the width of the belt. Fold over the end of this wire so that it passes through the centre of the buckle, separating it into 2 halfs, then fold it back the way it came and seccure it by winding it tightly around another wire section of the buckle. After you've done that tie a section of dark brown embroidery thread to the centre, and wind it round the wire to cover it, as can be seen in the diagrams below.

Thread the end of the belt through this buckle, then sew together the 2 ends of the belt.

Sew the belt to the waistband of the skirt.

Place the bodice onto the figure and lace it up at the back using a scrap of #10 crochet cotton.

Slide the skirt onto Ann and tuck the bodice in. You may with to sew the 2 sections together is you aren't bothered about being able to dress/undress your figure.

For the shoes (make 2):
Using a 2mm hook and white 4ply yarn make a magic loop with 6sc
Round 1: 2sc in each st (12sc)
Round 2: sc in the first st, 2sc in the next st, rep  to end (18sc)

Round 8: sc2tog,sc17
Round 9: sc17, ch9, skip7, slip2

Place these onto the feet. You may wish to sew them in place to prevent them from falling off.
