Little 1st Doctor (Doctor Who)

This model is of the first Doctor from Doctor Who. It is part of a series I'm making of all of the doctors. It is part of my 'little animals' collection, meaning that the clothes in this pattern should fit onto any of those animals.

Difficulty:
Easy - medium

You will need:
  • A 2.5mm crochet hook
  • A 2mm crochet hook
  • A 1mm crochet hook
  • dk yarn in light grey and white
  • 4ply yarn in black, white, and grey
  • #10 crochet cotton in white, grey, and black
  • Embroidery thread in black, white, and grey
  • Toy stuffing
  • A pet brush
  • A darning needle
  • A regular sewing needle
  • An embroidery needle
  • A kettle
  • A small section of cardboard

Note:
  • The 'loop behind the back loop' refers to the '3rd loop' in the image below
  • 'fasten off neatly' refers to a special way of fastening off which is neater and makes it easier to see where you should be crocheting on the next round (also known as invisible fastening off). This involves pulling up your yarn through your stitch, threading the yarn underneath the second stitch from where you pulled your yarn up, then threading your yarn back through the top of this stitch and down through the back of the work. There is a very helpful site that explains it clearly found here. Just make sure when you do this that you thread your needle through the SECOND stitch after the last stitch you made, otherwise you will end up with an extra stitch which may mean that all of the following rounds are out of line with each other. The false stitch that you create is referred to in this pattern as the 'new' st.

For the ears:

Sew these to the sides of the head

You now need to shape the head. Use repeated stitches through the head to pull the eye sockets back into the face (you may end up with indents on the opposite side of the head but these will get covered by the hair)
After this use the same techniques to pull in the cheeks, as shown below

For the eyes:
Use white embroidery thread to ass the whites of the eyes. Then add the irises with a single strand of grey embroidery thread, and the pupils with a strand of black thread. You may also wish to add eyebrows using grey embroidery thread (you can just about see this in the second image, though it's a bit faint)

For the hair (needs more detailed explanation):
Cut a length of cardboard 6cm long and wind white dk yarn around it a number of times. Cut these at 1 end so that you end up with 12cm strands.

Brush the hait using a dog brush until it's smooth

You now need to shape the hair. Start by sewing a line just above the ears so that the hait lies flat above this region. Try to hide the stitches behind other strands of hair to make it less visible.

After this you should fold the end sof the hair up so that they're hidden by the hair higher up the head. This should form a loop of hair, as shown below. You may need to trim the hair to make this look right. Sew this in place.

Sew the head to the body
